While recovering from last year’s spectacular hangover, I recently took time out to watch a few music videos from 1999. My roommate had mentioned something about remembering when Y2K was the biggest worry on everybody’s mind, that his mom had stockpiled bottled water and canned ham in anticipation of some kind of huge explosion. Well, I got to thinking about what Y2K meant to me, 9 years after the fact, and all I could think about was Will Smith’s song, “Will2K”, a song about the new “Willenium”.
http://www.dailymotion.com/videox2aqs0Now, admit it, you probably owned a copy of Big Willy Style, with such classics as “Getting Jiggy With It”, and “Miami”. You might have even really thought that Will Smith was a phenomenal rapper, considering your mom let you listen to his fresh and funky clean lyrics on the way to your after school drama rehearsals. After watching these videos 9 years after thinking they were “awesome”, I realized a few things:
- Will Smith is a terrible rapper. He overuses “Woo” and “Ha ha” and “Say Wha-say-wha”. He raps about fun parties and being respectful. He might as well be rapping about a box social. Since he is such a ridiculous rapper — and I do love all things ridiculous — he is, in reality, a rap God and his past albums should be a staple in this coming year for all your sexy parties.
- I never actually owned a Will Smith album in my youth. I will have to remedy that this year.
- Did people really wear suits like that in the 90s? Can I still get suits like that?
Seriously. I know that my penchant for bad taste might be affecting this one, but seriously: take some time out of your busy day watch “Will2K”. I know you will enjoy it.
