The cat is more than likely out of the bag on Surrogate. Their debut album, Love Is For The Rich, has been out for a while now, but I just picked it up so it is new to me, and worth a review.
If you were to mix equal parts Travis with The Get Up Kids, throw in the vocal stylings of Brian Molko (Placebo) mixed with Jeremy Palaszewki (No Motiv) and maybe a little Neil Young, you would get a general idea of what you will hear when you first listen to the band.
Love Is For The Rich is a nice mellow indie album that would fit nicely into any indie fan’s collection.
The opening track “Shift The Blame” opens the album nicely. The following track 15 is a little redundant, but once you hit the instrumental bridge the song is worth the repetitive-ness of the line, “forget about the money, and forget about yourself”, as it is repeated about a hundred times.
The band is comprised of only two members – Chris Keene and Jordan Mallory. Keene and Mallory started Surrogate as an escape from the “constantly over driven wall of sound” that Keene described as their old band, Number One Gun.
The change of pace, and sound, is a nice departure as they pull it off quite well.
