Tragically Flawed With A Good Heart

‘Californication’, simply put, is the best thing to grace the magic glow boxes in the last few years.

Hank Moody (David Duchovny) is an alcohol abusing, depressed, blank-drawing-writer who hates the city he now calls ‘home’…not to mention, a man with a strong lust for the company of a lady.

Moody’s life consists of women, alcohol consumption, caring for his daughter, and trying to win the heart of his ex-girlfriend and mother to his daughter, Karen (Natascha McElhone).

Hank’s depression spawns from a number of things; he hasn’t written anything good in a while and his ex-girlfriend, who he is still desperately in love with, is set to marry a man he despises.

The first season of the show is complete as of October 29, 2007, and I can’t wait for the next season to begin.

It took me some time to get used to the fact that there was a ton of nudity in this show… mainly in the first few episodes. Once I realized it was a Showtime show, things made a little more sense.

If you can get past the gratuitous nudity that takes place in the first few episodes, you will fall in love with this show.
The characters are pretty complex, and the show ranges from laughs to tears.

I found myself laughing aloud…all by myself…when the whole ‘broner’ conversation took place. For those of you unfamiliar with the broner, I will explain it word for word from the show.

bron·er (brō’nər)
n. Informal.

The unintentional-man-inspired boner.

Within the next few episodes I was feeling a sense of heartbreak…watching Hank try to win the heart of Karen, and his daughter…all while his world around him is falling apart.

To wrap this up, I would recommend this show to anyone…anyone who can get past nudity, and cursing on TV that is.

WARNING: Contains profanity. Viewer discretion is advised.

I am sorry that you are an unsuccesful indie film maker grant, but that is no reason for you to take it out on the rest of us people just trying to get on with our daily lives. You should really be ashamed at the fact that you have nothing better to do than to take your failed dreams out on other people.

You can’t believe I write for the same site as you, or even exist on the same planet as you? Grant Grant Grant, you are worse off than I could have ever imagined.

    In short…get a life, douche.

  2. OH NO!!! David david david… but YOU CAN’T DOWNLOAD! I command you to mail money to the distributors, and writers, and actors, and catering crews, and stunt teams, and editors, and seamstresses, and janitorial crews at the television station offices, recording studios, and production companies!!!

You must pay for all the damage that you have done… it is completely unconscionable !!! you are debateably (once again should be a word) worse than many of the minor to medium war criminals in the bast 300 years combined!!!

I am ashamed that you not only write for the same website i do, but that you exist on the same planet i do… you are destroying lives… LIVES!!! These artists won’t be able to put food on the plates of their children… gold plated food, on their children’s gold plated plates… for their gold plated pallets to lap up!!! They will be forced to only choose one or two things to plate in gold… how does that make you feel?!?!

I hope you finally now understand that you are not only dealing with lives, but in dreams as well. Destroying a life is easy, but, my friend, you found a way to destroy a dream… thanks for bringing us all down in your swill of deplorable actions.

    I hope you are proud.

I find downloading TV shows to be the least of horrible crimes. First of all, TV shows get paid by TV stations to play their stuff. They don’t actually make money by people watching the show. I suppose you could argue that if everyone just downloads the show, and never watches it when it airs, or buys the dvd then the show will end up being canceled. But in the defense of downloaders (especially in the case of Californication) – it isn’t on the air right now, and the DVD isn’t available…so download it all you want.

I also believe that if someone is wanting get ‘in’ to a show, but is a few seasons behind in the show…download it. Who knows if you will end up liking the show, and spending $70 on a DVD box set is unrealistic.

Downloading music and movies is a totally different thing, in my mind. I will admit to doing both, but if I download something and find it worthwhile to buy….I do. Case in point: Downloading introduced me to Band of Horses…which is now one of my favourite bands…which also lead me to buying their stuff.

    Just my thoughts.

  4. the first season of Californication isn’t available on dvd yet. Though you can get it on most digital download services (ie iTunes), and i am sure that if you really tried you could find them at no cost… though of course i do not recommend stealing television shows off the internet!!! It is a horrible crime, and no one likes the people that do it or the people that approve of the action…

on that note though i am sure you can find it on a torrent site…

Anyways i suspect that it won’t be released on dvd until the lawsuit between the show and The Red Hot Chile Peppers is settled. RHCP is claiming the show stole the name off their critically acclaimed 1999 album, but most legal experts say that the band has no legal feet to stand on since they not only didn’t coin the term itself (first in print in the 70′s) but they also failed to protect the name once the album was released. So once this little problem is solved i am sure that the dvd would come right out. This is something i don’t suspect will take that long, but give it a couple of months…

or… like i said… do the horribly illegal thing… and download it for free…

Does anyone know where to get the first season of Californication?

  6. Grant says:

RSD still lives on… late night… but huff is MIA, and season two will not even be released on DVD!!!

so the fact that RSD is still available for optical consumption is the reason why there are no mourners for it…

  7. David says:

    Haha, nice.

  8. Jordan says:

I still say late night Showcase porn was the height of David Duchovney’s glory.

Lament Huff all you want, but where are the mourners for Red Shoe Diaries’ cancellation?

  9. Grant says:

i find it fills the void of the show Huff… that was tragically canceled… if I were you i would check out that show too… it is fantastic… though season two is not yet released on dvd, and has no release date in the near future…
