I’m BACK!
I went on a bit of a vacation, and I really wanted to try and get the Whether Report done whilst in Florida, but guess what… my rum-riddled body was unable to form a coherent sentence mentally let alone convince my fingers and eyes to work in tandem to type out the grammatically disastrous recommendations I had for you.
Essentially, I hope you were able trudge your way through the movies on your own, but let me do a quick run down on last two weekends of flicks for you all before I delve into this weekend.
For June 26th
-
Transformers: Rise of the Fallen
Whether or NOT?!: YES…
Unless your girlfriend drools more over him as much as mine does. If that’s the case, then no. -
My Sister’s Keeper
Whether or NOT?!: NO…
Same people as the Notebook made this. That’s more than enough reason to never watch this. -
Chéri
Whether or NOT?!: YES.
Stephen Frears is an automatic win… most of the time.
For July 3rd
-
Public Enemies
Whether or NOT?!: YES…
-
Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs
Whether or NOT?!: Meh…
OK… Shall we segue into the present?!
Brüno

One of the MAMOTYs that obviously can’t fit into any category except its own. It is incredible that Sacha Baron Cohen has essentially created his own genre (and many can argue that this genre isn’t invented by Sacha, but no one can argue that he didn’t reinvent it. And, as far as I can tell, he is the only person to successfully do what he does on the big screen). There is a fear of whether or not this film will live up to the expectations, the HIGH expectations, that most people have.
Whether or NOT?!: YES!!!
Honestly, the biggest thing about this movie is that you don’t want to be the one person in your group of friends that hasn’t seen it… because it is incredibly annoying to hear “You haven’t seen that yet?! YOU GOTTA SEE IT!” If it is only a portion as annoying to you as it is to me, then you feel the need to dismember the person asking you.
Anyways, suffice it to say, this flick is going to be good, and the hardest thing for it to overcome is that we aren’t going into this film with no idea what to expect; Borat had plenty of “OH MY F*CKING GOD” reactions, but this one will lack that, because we are prepared. That being said… I’m freaking excited!
“How do you defend yourself against a man with a Dildo.”
Notables: Sacha Baron Cohen, Larry Charles, Harrison Ford, and RON PAUL! Yeah… that Ron Paul.
I Love You, Beth Cooper
- what the fuck!? HE DIRECTED THIS?! I remember when he did great stuff (Harry Potter), oh wait… I also remember when he did shit (Home Alone) [↩]

This is a loser with a hot girl “WE JUST GRADUATED FROM HIGH SCHOOL”-type comedy… Yep… that is exactly… what it is…
Whether or NOT?!: No.
Don’t see it. Its the same cookie cutter featuring a loser doing a grand gesture and getting a shot with the hot girl, but the hot girl who thinks its kinda more of a joke eventually grows as a human being… And, in the end, they both realize something valuable about themselves as they move forward with their lives into the collegiate world… YAWN.
Notables: Chris Columbus[1], Hayden Panettiere.

The thing that bothers me about the “You’ve never seen film X?!” comment is the fact that people would always preface it with (at least with me) “you want to go into the arts and you haven’t seen this film”… it annoys me because I have seen so many movies, and most of which the inquisitor hasn’t even HEARD OF… but what can you do. There are many many films in the world, and it is impossible to see all the films you should see, there isn’t enough time in the world to see them.
O my goodness. I am always “that person”. I still haven’t seen Borat and it took me at least 2 years after the release of American Pie to see it. It just makes me not want to watch the movie more than I had originally planned on. Soooo I forsee this happening with Bruno. If I plan on leaving my house, it better be for a good reason.
Actually, in response to your Bruno remark, I sorta enjoy hearing people ask me, with great incredulity, “you’ve never seen film X?!” That’s usually for so-called “classics,” admittedly. One thing I’m starting to realize is that it’s a bit tricky blogging about pop culture while being so resistant to the zeitgeist (also known as “not want to watch the shit that other people are watching”).
